UNIDO in partnership with leading research institutes conducts applied economic research on the topics related to inclusive and sustainable industrial development, including structural transformation, global value chains, foreign direct investment, employment generation, innovation and technological development, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
On this basis, it advocates the relevance of accelerated and environmentally sound industrial development as instruments to increase growth, environmental sustainability, employment generation and innovation. Research aims to support Member States in their analysis for policy design and diversification of their productive capacities, while advocating for inclusive and sustainable industrialization strategies at the global and regional level. Functions include:
- Providing evidence-based analysis of the economic growth process and industrial development assessed in terms of geographic regions and levels of development;
- Preparing the Industrial Development Report;
- Organizing forums to discuss research findings and policy implications;
- Enhancing the role of industrial development in achieving the SDGs.
The research team regularly publishes research papers on inclusive and sustainable industrial development.
Industrial Development Report Series
The Industrial Development Report series is intended to build on development policy experience and contribute to a refinement of the international development agenda. The reports provide guidance to policy makers and assist both public and private stakeholders to formulate, implement and monitor national strategies for effective poverty reduction through sustained productivity enhancement. International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics
The International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics is a flagship publication of UNIDO that provides economists, planners, policymakers and business people with worldwide statistics on current level, structure and trends in the manufacturing sector. The Yearbook is designed to facilitate international comparisons relating to manufacturing activity and industrial development and performance. It provides data that can be used to analyse patterns of growth and related long-term trends, structural change and industrial performance in individual industries. It can be ordered here.
